What Does It Mean to Be a Computer Geek?
What image does the word “geek” conjure up in your mind? Oversized glasses? A Dungeons and Dragons whizz? Science fiction enthusiast? Avid comic collector? The lines between a geek and a nerd are commonly blurred.
For me, a Geek is an expert and enthusiast. So a Computer Geek is an expert and enthusiast of technology. I think Marissa Mayer, Google’s first female engineer and former CEO of Yahoo, has nicely pinned down what it means to be a geek – “Geeks are people who love something so much that all the details matter.”
The making of a Computer Geek
I grew up in the 80s and 90s, which was a very exciting time to be an IT geek. The BBC Microcomputer was introduced to schools and the Commodore 64, Spectrum 48K, and joysticks became commonplace in many households. Later the Atari hit the scene, the internet took over the world. Broadband, CDs, DVDs, streaming video and online gaming became the present instead of the future. Who didn’t get excited about the almighty Counterstrike and Ultima Online? Ok… maybe it was just me.
What could be better than making a career out of a lifelong obsession AND helping people who find it all…well… frustrating at best? Luckily, I’m in good company, and I get to share my passion with the Computer Geeks team. We’re all in it for the same reasons.
Why we love what we do
For me, it’s always been about using my expertise to help others. I launched the business so that I could use my knowledge and experience to shortcut people through their IT challenges. And I have a little bit of fun doing it too. Technology is supposed to be exciting and innovative, and we at Geeks aim to be strategic and human in our advice to make the most out of technology. We strive to be purposeful in everything we do, and that’s reflected in our company values.
Do you ever wish that other people loved something as much as you do? That their life would be better for it? We believe that it’s important to help our customers understand what we’re doing and why, and that helps cut through the mire of confusion surrounding technology. And we know we’ve accomplished our ultimate goal when our client is as enthusiastic as we are about what technology can do for them.
So, what sort of world would it be without us Geeks?
Geeks immerse themselves so deeply in their area of interest that they make what would usually be solely in the realm of scientists available for public consumption. They love exploring the minute details of their subject and savour having a niche. Geeks keep learning. And they love to share their knowledge and experience to benefit others. As Bill Gates said, “If your culture doesn’t like geeks, you are in real trouble.”
