Why are backups so necessary?

29.06.22

Reliable and regular backups should form a crucial part of your recovery plan. Disasters can happen, from sophisticated cyber-attacks to floods, data loss occurring from these events can be detrimental to businesses of all sizes and regular backups can help you bounce back in an emergency.

When running servers within your organisation, the backup strategy you hold is extremely important.

In a virtualised environment (typically when you have Microsoft Hyper V, or VMware environments), the type of backups that you are running are image-based. This means that everything, including the operating systems, data, shares, settings, and configurations, are contained within the back up.

So, if a disaster does occur, not only will you be able to restore from a backup knowing that all your data is intact, but all the configurations that underly that instance of the operating system will be restored too. For example, if you have had your Sage, Intact or SQL installer spend several days installing and configuring your environment, the work to put that together will be included in the backup.

In short, you will be able to restore a point-in-time backup of your server from the backup media, quickly and easily, without a high skill level being required.

How do we do this?

We take backups incredibly seriously here at Computer Geeks; we have invested in technology which reliably automates and monitors all our backups, with systems that alert us to any potential fault within seconds.

Our backup system allows virtualised environments to backup virtual servers quickly and easily. Typically, the entire virtualised environment can be backed up fresh and to new hardware within 24-hours of the drive being plugged in.

When we partner with a new client, creating a backup strategy is top of the agenda. We’ll supply a new drive, deploy our backup software (which is included in our service), set up all of the settings and schedule the first backup. We will then ensure that the off-site backups, which also form part of our care for all clients with servers, are accurately seeded to our off-site datacentre in Gloucester. This state-of-the-art datacentre is complete with advanced cooling, comprehensive security, and resilient power.

This means that you will have both a secure onsite backup at your business premises, as well as an offsite backup at our datacentre in Gloucester. These backups are also monitored by our experienced engineers, mitigating the risk of data loss.
