Why is it important to have the latest Windows operating system?
Windows are always looking to upgrade and better their operating system. That’s why we’re now at Windows 11 and not still with Windows 1.0 which was released in 1985! But why is it important for users to keep their desktops and laptops up to date with the latest operating system? We’ve explained it…
Why are there new operating systems?
Microsoft have been releasing new operating systems every few years in order to apply their research and improve upon the previous system. Every new release has new features, improved security and updates which you can tailor to your digital workspace. Microsoft focus on providing support for the most recently released operating system, therefore the previous operating system reaches end of life.
What does this mean?
When an operating system reaches end of life, Microsoft no longer offer any technical support, security fixes or software updates for this version.
This can lead to security issues: without security fixes and software updates, fixes and patching, your business can be at risk of viruses and security breaches. Moreover, you could be at risk of breaching GDPR through running unprotected software.
Running old operating systems can also lead to a slow performance which can hamper your productivity. And, if you do encounter any technical issues arising, it’s increasingly difficult for us to deal with them on a retired platform.
What should I do?
We strongly recommend replacing devices running a retired operating system with a Windows 10 (or 11) device as this brings with it the most current features, improved security and is fully supported by Microsoft.
Here at Computer Geeks, we’re recommending that any of our customers who are running any Windows 7 machines in their network should replace them immediately as Windows 7 reached end of life on 14th January 2020.
If your device is a current model, there is also the option to upgrade it to Windows 10, it just needs to meet the minimum specification, which you can check here. If you’re unsure whether to upgrade your current device or buy a new device, Microsoft have created a handy quiz to help you decide, which you can find here.
Windows 11 was also released in October 2021, many businesses are choosing to upgrade to Windows 11 to take advantage of the new and improved features that come with it, but no need to worry, Microsoft will continue to support Windows 10 until its end of life in October 2025, giving user plenty of time to prepare.
On an opt-in basis, we are upgrading our customers devices to Windows 11, free of charge. Devices must meet the Microsoft minimum requirements for installing Windows 11, which you can find here. If your device doesn’t meet these requirements, you might want to consider purchasing a new device.
